
Farrokh has over 40 years of experience in risk assessment and reliability analysis, natural hazards and disaster risk reduction, tailings dams and rockfill dams, earthquake engineering, offshore installations, and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for mitigation of the risk posed by floods and landslides. He is a world-renowned specialist in running risk assessment workshops for critical infrastructure.
Until 2023, Farrokh was Technical Director at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, including for ten years as the Director of the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG), one of the first Norwegian Centres of Excellence. He is author or co-author of over 280 scientific publications and 150 scientific reports, a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) (2009-2011), and one of the key contributors to the bi-annual Global Assessment Reports for Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR) of UNDRR (2009-2015).
Farrokh has been involved in numerous multinational European research projects aimed at climate adaptation and reducing the risk of natural hazards, as well as several World Bank projects. He has also served on the Advisory Boards of the Panama Canal Authority and the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change.
